Berwick Cottage Conservation & Childcare Redevelopment

Heritage and redevelopment works in Berwick involving the retention of a c.1910 Edwardian cottage as part of a broader subdivision and childcare development.

The project commenced with the preparation of a detailed Schedule of Conservation Works to address permit conditions and enable subdivision of the site. The heritage dwelling, although in a highly deteriorated condition, was not considered beyond repair and required a comprehensive conservation approach to stabilisation, reconstruction and long-term maintenance.

A subsequent Heritage Impact Statement was prepared to support the development of a new childcare centre. Gardiner Architects led the design of the facility, with heritage advice ensuring the proposal responds appropriately to the significance and setting of the retained building.

The project demonstrates a staged approach to heritage, integrating conservation requirements with new development to support planning approval and a viable long-term use for the site.
